‘ Apartment for Peggy,’ Superior Film, Written, Directed by George Seaton, at Roxy

By BOSLEY CROWTHER

Published: October 16, 1948

George Bernard Shaw’s lamentation about youth being wasted on the young is made to seem pitifully feeble by the current evidence on the Roxy’s screen. For “Apartment for Peggy,” the new-color picture which opened in that theatre yesterday, is a delightful and thoroughly heartening estimation of the capacities of modern youth. And it is also a cheering indication of the progressing talent of a young man. George Seaton, who wrote and directed it, wrote and directed “Miracle on 34th Street” too.

The same genial feeling for people, the same easy naturalness, the same wistful charm and the same actor—beguiling, beloved Edmund Gwenn—which brightened that other picture are put by Mr. Seaton in this. Only this time he has added some wisdom of a particularly pertinent sort respecting the dauntless optimism of young people in this darkening world. And he has slipped it into a simple story that is loaded with humor and warmth. In many respects this one is better than “Miracle on 34th Street.” So there!

Maybe it won’t sound so brilliant in a sketchy indication of the yarn, for pictures in which young people stir their elders are seldom promising. And this one is in that category, being the story of a youthful married pair, beating the GI path through college, and an old professor whom they reinspire with zeal.

But it is not so much the story that is fascinating in this film. It is the rich exposition of human characters through a wealth of enchanting details. It is the soft illumination of the old fellow, so beautifully played by Mr. Gwenn, as a person of genuine compassion oppressed by intellectual despairs. It is the true demonstration of a GI student, which William Holden plays, and, especially, the vivid characterization, by Jeanne Crain, of his wife. And it is also the whole comprehension of the contemporary college atmosphere and the determination of young people to get meaning and purpose into their lives.

Simply, without any pretense, Mr. Seaton has amusingly conveyed the stubborn struggle of a young wife to accomplish a few important things—to get her husband educated, to get a roof over their heads and to get a baby delivered with the least grief possible. And he has likewise affectingly brought forth, with the humble assistance of Mr. Gwenn, a genuine comprehension of the emotional longings of the old. He has made an enriching picture, balanced with laughter and tears. Anyone who doesn’t see it will be missing one of the best comedies of the year.

Also on the program with this picture is a remarkably fine short film, entitled “Symphony of a City,” composed of views and sounds of life in Stockholm. Flowing with a grace and rhythm in image that is genuine camera art, this Swedish-made work of Arne Sucksdorff merits mention with the superior feature film.

On the stage at the Roxy are Kay Thompson, comedienne, and the Williams Brothers; Rolly Bills, Ben Beri, the Gae Foster Roxyettes and an ice ballet featuring Arnold Shoda.
